How to Prepare Your Home for Professional Bedbug Treatment

How to prepare your home for bedbug treatment in Kenya: bedding and laundry, furniture, children and pets, what to avoid and what happens between visits.

A bright bedroom with a neatly made bed, light curtains and clear floor space

Good preparation is one of the biggest factors in how well bedbug treatment works. It gives the technician access to every hiding place, keeps bedbugs from being spread around the home, and keeps your household safe.

A few days before treatment

Bedding and linen

  • Strip all beds in affected rooms. Fold bedding inwards and place it directly into bags; tie them closed.
  • Wash in the hottest water the fabrics allow, and dry thoroughly. Keep clean items sealed in fresh bags until after treatment.

Clothing

  • Bag clothing from wardrobes and drawers in affected rooms as instructed. Launder what can be washed hot; keep the rest sealed.
  • Do not carry unbagged clothing into other rooms.

Reduce clutter

  • Clear items from under beds and around the bedroom floor so bed frames and skirting boards are accessible.
  • Bag small items and keep them in the room unless the technician advises otherwise. Papers, toys and shoes all provide hiding places.

Furniture

  • Empty bedside tables and drawers so the inside can be inspected and treated.
  • Pull beds and furniture a little away from walls if this can be done without dragging them through other rooms.
  • Do not throw away mattresses or furniture before the visit unless the technician advises it. Moving infested furniture through the house can spread bedbugs.

On the day of treatment

  • Make sure the technician can reach every affected room.
  • Keep children and pets out of the treatment area, and plan for them to stay away for the re-entry period you are given.
  • Cover or remove fish tanks and switch off aquarium pumps if asked.
  • Remove food, plates and cutlery from rooms being treated.
  • Tell the technician about anyone in the household with asthma, allergies, pregnancy or other health concerns.

After the first treatment

  • Stay out of treated rooms for the re-entry period stated for your treatment. It varies by product and method, so there is no universal number of hours.
  • Ventilate as directed before going back in.
  • Continue to sleep in your own bed once it is safe to do so; it helps draw remaining bedbugs into treated areas.
  • Do not wash, wipe or vacuum treated surfaces until the technician says you can.
  • Do not apply your own sprays or powders between visits unless the technician agrees.
  • Expect to see some bedbugs for a short time after treatment, as hidden bugs come out and contact treated surfaces.

Before the second treatment

Our two-treatment programme includes a second visit six days after the first. Keep the preparation in place — beds accessible, clutter reduced, bags sealed — so the second treatment can reach the same areas.
